The John Gingell Award

g39 is pleased to announce the launch of the John Gingell Award. The Award will provide two artists an award of £5,000 toward the development of a body of work over a six-month period culminating in an exhibition at g39, Cardiff in the summer of 2013.

John Gingell (1935 – 2007) was a pioneering and passionate artist and arts educator. His own work crossed many media from performance, installation, to sculpture and public art. Relocating to Cardiff from London in 1966 he left his role within the Whitechapel gallery to take up a post as lecturer on the new Foundation course at the art school at Howard Gardens. John Gingell continued to develop new areas of practice, founding the MA course in Fine Art in 1987, of which he was director until 2001. With his restless energy and a zeal for change he was known to his students as 'The Dynamo'. He shaped the MA on a model which supported the students in expanding their practice outside college, within their own studios. The course encouraged those who wanted to extend and challenge their own practice or simply re-engage with making Art.

He not only believed in Art education, but by its own token that Art in itself was a crucial part of self education, a broadening and necessary activity. He developed an approach to teaching that was both stimulating and unconventional – performance was integrated into his teaching and performance lectures evolved into symposia and events. This award is a one off tribute to this inspirational thinker, artist, activist and agitator.

G39 will offer curatorial and critical support with the intention to significantly develop the recipients’ practices during this period. g39 will then present the resulting bodies of work.

April FORUM

FORUM returns to us on Thurs 26th of April at 7pm in the walls of Ffotogallery, Chapter.
This FORUM's theme is Archives and Collections and we'll have artists Rory Duckhouse and James Green, showing some of their archives and collections.

This FORUM follows the opening of the new Chapter exhibition: The Institute of Critical Zoologists which opens at 6pm.
The ICZ works with artists, scientists and researchers to develop a critical approach to the zoological gaze. Motivated by current ecological concerns, the heart of its practice addresses the human regard for animals as conveyors of meaning with values that are both culturally and politically specific.

This exhibition is co-curated by FORUMers Helen Warburton and Lauren Jury. More info can be found here.
