Gallery Talk with Emma Westecott Wednesday 25 February 6.30pm
To coincide with its current exhibition The Skater by Wendy McMurdo, Ffotogallery @ TurnerHouse will host a talk from Emma Westecott, Research Fellow in Computer Games Design at the University of Wales, Newport.
The Skater explores digital gaming, fantasy and play as subject, using both portraits of young gamers and skaters to explore an interest in the liminal space between simulation and reality. This exploration raises questions on what it is to be young in our time, offering a snapshot of youth today. Emma’s response to this work offers a theoretical context from which to conceive of the multiple threshold spaces on view. Whether in adolescence or in the virtual the act of play offers a very human way to explore and thereby navigate the challenges at hand.
Attending the talk is FREE, however there are limited seats available and so to avoid disappointment please ring ahead or send an email to turnerhouse@ffotogallery.org. For more information call us on (029) 2070 8870

Ffotogallery Book Arts Fayre on 'We Make Zines'
Interested in self-publishing and zine-making??
We Make Zines is a free social networking site hosted by Ning...
We Make Zines is an online community for zine makers and readers. Although there are many social networking sites out there, there is little that focuses on zines. We all have our myspace or blogs, but those accounts are filled with friends from work, from the third grade, people who don't know what a zine is and some who probably don't care.
You can create a profile, list your zineography, post images of zines, partake in the forums, find other zine writers, read about new releases, read reviews from your favorite zine writers and leave comments about the zine you just read on the actual zinesters profile.
We've found this an ace place to look for material for our Book Arts Fayre, so if you make zines its a good source for contacts.
We are still on the lookout for new contributors to exhibit or sell work at our next BAF so get in touch if you want to get involved!!!

Local courses for 'local' people
While I was in the process of compiling a 'course index' for local courses that might help forge a career for myself; Photoshop, Web design, French (!), I stumbled across this ready-made index; Floodlight, Cardiff's own "local guide to learning".
The list is remarkably extensive in terms of courses (the likes of which I have italicised above) and locations like the Howardian Centre, Cardiff, CF23 9NB; Llanover Hall Arts Centre, Cardiff, CF5 1FH; plus, of course, Chapter Arts Centre.

Beyond The Lens - AOP
"Published in England by the Association of Photographers (AOP), Beyond the Lens is the essential guide to rights, ethics and business practice in professional photography.
Now in its third edition it has been likened to 'the bible for photographers and commissioners' and is used by colleges/universities as part of their courses and widely used by photographers and commissioners." (taken from AOP website)
Might be useful because...
This website has an 'appendix.pdf' that you can download with templates for writing estimates, model release forms, invoices, license agreements, and also invoices etc for photographic assistants.
Click here and go to 'standard forms' in the left-hand navigation!
