Tom Hobson's Art Update

Hello FORUMMERS, Here is an update of what I have been doing in the studio.


This is a mountain made of mountains, maybe it is called mountainmountain, or mOUNTAIN, or Mt. Mountain. I don't know yet. everyday it gets a little bit closer to being finished.

It should fit from floor to ceiling with the pinnacle right on the ceiling - so I am making it in detachable sections that overlap. Hopefully it is going to be in a show in Edinburgh in the autumn, ICML communal fingers crossed.


This is called " Eyes to the Hills" It is made from the leftover bits of sky from when I cut out mountains. So it is a sort of mountain of sky - or just an ambiguous peak. I'll put a better photo on my website soon. Contact me if you want to buy it to put in your bathroom tom@tomhobson.co.uk.


This is another collage made from the leftovery skys from making mountainmountain, at first I didn't like it, then i liked it - and now I don't think I like it. I swear it looks better in the flesh. Maybe this one doesn't get past quality control and will go in the art bin. It just looks like some careless assemblage of skyand not the borderline landscape/abstract composition I was hoping for. At one stage there was a nice moment where it sort of became a landscape and then not a landscape and then a landscape and then not a landscape and sort of fluctuated between 2d and 3d.


The image above is from new series of video works. They are something to do with the difficulty of accurate expression in art and are made from concentric layers of hollywood films. Each circular layer is staggered by one frame so that it radiates from the centre - with a weird temporal delay to the audio and video. Tough to describe in words but easy to understand when you look at them. Maybe Gareth will show some of them in his awesome flat/gallery.

Bringing back traditional photography techniques, this workshop will allow participants to make their very own hand-made Pinhole camera, learn how to expose prints and develop them in the darkroom.

Internship oppertunity at g39

Internship WARP, g39, Cardiff

6 months part time (from 10th September 2010) £2400 Stipend*

Following on from three successful past internships WARP is pleased to announce that we are now looking for a new intern to work alongside Sean Edwards the Professional Development Officer at WARP. The Intern position is aimed at those with some experience with an arts organisation but who wish to develop their skills further through training and direct engagement with the sector. It is open to both arts practitioners and non-practitioners alike but knowledge and understanding of contemporary art is essential. The Intern will be responsible for the ongoing operation of the WARP artist resource area and the co-ordination of the volunteer workforce at the gallery. They will also be involved in the administration of the schemes and have the opportunity to liaise with both the marketing and exhibition teams at g39.

g39 is a publicly funded art organisation focussed on increasing awareness and understanding of contemporary art in Wales. This is achieved mainly through its programme of exhibitions, presented in the permanent ‘white cube’ premises in Cardiff city centre and offsite temporary venues. g39 profiles work by contemporary artists from Wales alongside those from the rest of the UK and beyond. It does not make curatorial distinctions between differing career levels of artists; however it does focus its attention on emerging artists.

Wales Artist Resource Programme (WARP) was established in 2008 as an in-house artist run professional development resource that enables g39 to offer Welsh and Wales-based artists mentoring, training and advice from arts professionals. The programme comprises a number of schemes that are delivered responsively according to the ambition and needs of participants in relation to the arts sector, whether skills-based, entrepreneurial, business skills, or academic critique.

Popup Gallery Show 1 - The Pics

Well after two days of frantic hanging after work I was very happy to have about 50 kind soles through the door.

Show No 1 - featuring documentary photography by Gareth Phillips, concentrated on Holm Towers a Cancer support center in Penarth.

Below are a few pictures of the show and people enjoying the free cheap boxed wine that was on offer.

I am proud to announce that this Friday I will be launching my first 'popup' style gallery venture from the safety of my own flat !

Art Fairs - Autumn 2010

There are few interesting events coming up this Autumn, which are worth of visiting or for some of you to participate in!


Frieze Art Fair (14-17 October 2010) features over 150 of the most exciting contemporary art galleries in the world. The fair also includes specially commissioned artists’ projects, a prestigious talks programme and an artist-led education schedule.



The Affordable Art Fair (21-24 October 2010) returns to Battersea Park, London where 120 galleries will offer a stunning array of contemporary art from just £50 up to £3,000. From the hottest young talent to firmly established household names, with so much choice you’re bound to find something you love whether you’re an experienced collector or simply looking for a masterpiece for the mantelpiece. This October, AAF features an exciting line-up of special events. The Contemporary Art Society will run a series of informative talks about collecting art, whilst the AAF Education Programme – under the theme ‘Food, Glorious Food’ – is hosting plenty of hands-on, family-friendly activities, all of which are fun, enlightening and free. The Recent Graduates’ Exhibition will showcase the best of the diverse work being produced in British art schools, and give you the perfect opportunity to snap up a beautiful and unique work by one of tomorrow’s potential stars.




Brighton Art Fair (16-19 September 2010) is an opportunity for the public to buy art from the best local and national artists and for artists to sell direct to the public, to make contacts and to build a relationship with buyers and potential buyers. Brighton Art Fair has come to be seen as a friendly, high quality show, firmly established as a must-visit event in many art buyers calendars. It is now the largest art exhibition on the South Coast and brings together about 130 of the most talented national painters, printmakers, photographers and sculptors along with artist groups and Sussex based galleries. Tickets are available on the door at £6 per person (children under 14 free) or in advance on-line. Advance tickets cost £5.00 but there is a booking fee. Private View tickets for Thursday, 16th September (6pm - 8.30pm) are also available on-line. An exhibitor catalogue is included in the ticket price.




The South West Contemporary Art Fair (23-24 October 2010)
Founded in 2005, the South West Contemporary Art Fair was originally held at the Phoenix Arts Centre in Exeter. The success of the fair meant that space restrictions at the Phoenix became limited - we are very excited about our new venue of the spacious Civic Hall in Totnes which not only gives the fair the opportunity to expand and provide a larger platform for artists - but also offers more choice for buyers. The fair gives artists the chance to network directly with the public and galleries in a relaxed and unstuffy environment and gives buyers the chance to purchase high quality contemporary art direct from the artist.
